Alcohol

Alcohol is a psychoactive drug that has a depressant effect. A high blood alcohol content is usually considered to be legal drunkenness because it reduces attention and slows reaction speed. Alcohol can be addictive, and the state of addiction to alcohol is known as alcoholism. The production and consumption of alcohol occurs in most cultures of the world, from hunter-gatherer peoples to nation-states. Alcoholic beverages are often an important part of social events in these cultures. In many cultures, drinking plays a significant role in social interaction — mainly because of alcohol’s neurological effects.

History:

The discovery of late Stone Age beer jugs has established the fact that purposely fermented beverages existed at least as early as c. 10,000 BC. It has been suggested that beer may have preceded bread as a staple.

Alcohol Withdrawal- “AVERSION THERAPY”

- Gastric Lavage

- Respiratory and Cardiovascular Support

- CNS stimulants are CONTRAINDICATED

b. Withdrawal

- Administration of benzodiazepines through tapering or fixed schedule dosing

c. Disulfiram (Antabuse) to deter client from drinking

- Cleint should be advised to avoid alcohol-containing products such as mouthwash, vinegar, fruitcake, shaving cream, astringent, toner, and acetone/ nail polish.

d. Acamprosate (Campral) for recovering alcoholics to reduce cravings.
